It is with great sadness to announce the passing away of Bert Henshaw (RGJ), Bert passed away peacfully at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital last week. I will post a short ‘bio’ of Bert later when time permits. I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends of which there are many.

ITN - Army instructors suspended amid bullying claims

Published by admin under Uncategorized

The British Army is amid another "bullying" controversy after five training instructors were suspended.

Allegations of physical abuse and harassment of young recruits at a training base in Catterick, North Yorkshire, have been made public after an undercover reporting investigation.

Following the undercover investigation, the MoD said: "Bullying is absolutely unacceptable and fundamentally at odds with the Army’s core values. We take all allegations of inappropriate behaviour extremely seriously and investigate thoroughly.

On a different tack. I read that the "undercover reporter" served six months (source BBC News) at the training depot at Catterick. If this true is the ‘Hack’ still in; if not then why? The cut off for changing your mind about joining up used to be 12 weeks after that you had to serve your period of enlistment. If the MOD has let this ‘Hack’ go then it surely has set a precedence for those who change their minds after the 12 week stage?

Bert Henshaw is probably as well know within the LI as he is in the RGJ. Unfortunately Bert is seriously ill but still fighting on. I have extended the best wishes from the Silver Bugle and the LI members who know and have served with him. We wish Bert and his family all the best and godspeed for a full recovery.

THE GOLDEN JOURNEY TO SAMARKAND

Published by admin under British Army

James Elroy Flecker

But who are ye in rags and rotten shoes,
You dirty-bearded, blocking up the way?

We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go
Always a little further: it may be
Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow,
Across that angry or that glimmering sea,

White on a throne or guarded in a cave
There lives a prophet who can understand
Why men were born: but surely we are brave,
Who take the Golden Road to Samarkand.

Sweet to ride forth at evening from the wells
When shadows pass gigantic on the sand,
And softly through the silence beat the bells
Along the Golden Road to Samarkand.

We travel not for trafficking alone;
By hotter winds our fiery hearts are fanned:
For lust of knowing what should not be known
We make the Golden Journey to Samarkand.

Poem by JE Flecker inscribed on the “Clock” at SAS HQ Hereford.
